MARSHFIELD – Andrew John Kugl, 73, of Lower Depot Road, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at his home with his family at bedside.
Born on June 30, 1935 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of Andrew John and Elizabeth (Kekstetter) Kugl. He graduated from the Niagara Falls Collegiate Vocational Institute in 1952. While in high school, he was a member of the Niagara Falls Memorial Band and played on the football and hockey teams and also the St. Patrick's hockey team. In 1977, he received his BA Degree in Public Administration from Cal State University in San Bernardino, CA.
In earlier years, he had worked for Ontario Hydro before serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1954 to 1956. From 1956 to 1960, he served in the US Air Force Strategic Air Command at March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA. Later he entered law enforcement in 1961, when he began work with the Riverside Police Department and in 1964, he joined the California Highway Patrol being stationed in San Bernardino, Glendale, and Newhall, Cal., until his retirement in 1987. He was a motorcycle officer for both law enforcement departments and had been promoted to sergeant on the CHP.
On May 13, 1964, he married Charlene Liberty in Riverside, Cal. They lived in Riverside, Cal. and Valencia, Cal. They enjoyed traveling in their RV for four years before building their home in Marshfield, and continued making friends all over the country as snowbirds. While living in Marshfield, Andrew was affiliated with the Christ Ministries Church and was a member of the Montpelier Elks Club.
In addition to RVing, his other interests were gardening, history, motorcycles, reading, and especially spending time with his grandchildren whom he adored. He took great pleasure and satisfaction in building his own home.
Besides his wife, Charlene Kugl of Marshfield, he is survived by his daughter, Lisa Olsen and her husband, David of Portland, Or.; his son, Andrew C. Kugl and his wife, Heidi of Brentwood, Cal.; his three grandchildren, Ava Kugl, Andrew Jack Kugl, and Mia Kugl; his sister, Margaret Waters and two nephews, Brian Waters and Gary Waters, all of Niagara Falls, Ontario.
His parents and brother-in-law, Larry Waters predeceased him.
Friends are invited to the Kugl Home at 475 Lower Depot Road in Marshfield for a time of fellowship on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, from 2 to 8 p.m. His funeral service will be held at a time to be announced in the Spring of 2009 and interment will be in the Cabot Plains Cemetery.
