MANCHESTER (AP) — The town of Manchester is considering a zoning change that would boost the maximum allowable size of buildings downtown, but not everyone thinks it's a good idea.
"If you increase the square footage, you'll be allowing a slew of businesses to come in and drive us smaller businesses out," said Kerry Slattery, owner of Vermont Kitchen Supply Inc.
The town Planning Commission is recommending an increase in the maximum allowable building footprint — from 3,000 square feet to 15,000 square feet in the Depot Street corridor, and from 3,000 square feet to 7,000 square feet along Route 7A south — if the builders meet goals set out in the town plan.
In a selectboard meeting Tuesday, some said the change would end up driving small businesses out.
"This is a very drastic revision of current zoning," said resident Bradley Myerson. "There is no public outcry in favor of this." He drew applause from the gallery when he said Manchester's appeal lies partly in its "small" feel.
Supporters said the change would give diversity and flexibility.
For now, the proposal is on hold, pending a Dec. 2 session.
