Norwich rallies to beat Methodist 71-62

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Cadets closed the game on a 25-6 run to erase a 10-point deficit en route to Saturday's 71-62 victory in the consolation game of the Eastern North Carolina Classic.
Norwich (1-4) trailed 56-46 with 7:30 to play in the second half, but a 15-2 run over a span of 4:02 gave the Cadets a 61-58 lead at the 3:28 mark. Methodist (0-4) scored a basket to make it 61-60 with 3:12 to play, but the Cadets outscored the Monarchs 10-2 down the stretch to secure their first win of the season.
Mike Filipek scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the way for the Cadets. Joshua Cabrera and Tim Fico added eight points apiece, while Antonio Davis and Andrew Menzie each netted seven.
Methodist was led by Mark Jernigan and Tyler Sigman, who each scored 12 points. Joshua Crumpler chipped in 11 points for the Monarchs.
Filipek was named to the Eastern North Carolina Classic all-tournament team after a pair of strong performances.
Norwich will break for Thanksgiving before returning to action on Dec. 3, when the Cadets travel to Standish, Maine, to take on GNAC rival St. Joseph's of Maine.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Southern Maine 64, Norwich 61
GORHAM, Maine – Stacey Kent scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Southern Maine to a 64-61 win over Norwich in the championship game of the 2008 USM Tip Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Warren Hill Gymnasium in Gorham.
Norwich (2-1) whittled a 17-point deficit down to just a basket in the second half, but the Cadets were unable to get over the hump as they lost for the first time this year. The Huskies improve to 3-0 with the victory.
Norwich guards Erica Rate and Kayleigh Shappy were selected to the all-tournament team. Rate led the Cadets in scoring against USM with 12 points, while Shappy played a solid floor game at the point guard position with eight points, three assists and two steals.
Leading 33-25 at the break, USM outscored Norwich 20-8 in the opening eight minutes of the second half to open up a 53-36 lead with 12:27 to play. DeMillo keyed the Southern Maine offensive outburst, draining a trio of three-pointers in a row. Kent added five of the Huskies' points in the run, while Kristin Violette scored four points and junior forward Ruthie Briggs added a layup.
Both teams struggled to connect from the field after that and the Cadets were able to claw their way back into the game. Trailing by 16 points after a three-pointer from Nicole Paradis with 9:43 on the clock, the Cadets went on a 15-3 run to close the gap to 60-56 with 2:36 to play. Rate tallied six of the Cadets' 15 points with a pair of long-range three-pointer.
A pair of free throws from Kent gave the Huskies a 62-56 lead with 1:43 remaining before Norwich outscored USM 5-1 on a free throw from freshman forward Tara Stevenson and layups from Shappy and junior forward Jess Jaggars. That made the score 63-61 with five seconds to play, but Paradis sank one of two free throws on the Huskies' ensuing possession and Norwich's buzzer-beater attempt from three-point range failed to fall through the cylinder.
Norwich returns to action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at Middlebury.
Quinnipiac 72, Vermont 53
BURLINGTON – Quinnipiac shot 49 percent from the floor and went 10-for-21 from 3-point range to hand the Catamounts their first loss of the season in the first round of the TD Banknorth Classic at Patrick Gymnasium.
Vermont falls to 1-1 and fails to advance to the championship game for the first time in the 15-year history of the tournament. Quinnipiac remains unbeatena at 3-0.
Four Bobcats scored in double figures while UVM's Alissa Sheftic, the America East Player of the Game, posted the first double-double of her career with a career-high 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead Vermont. Classmate Sy Janousek added nine points and five rebounds off the bench.
Vermont will face Dartmouth, a 60-52 loser in overtime against Michigan State, in the consolation round.
Vermont Technical College 60, University of Maine-Augusta 48
RANDOLPH – Jodi Martin of Rochester scored a team-high 24 points for Vermont Tech in Saturday's 60-48 women's college basketball victory over the University of Maine-Augusta.
Eliza Wakefield of Danville pulled down 15 rebounds and scored 21 points for the Green Knights, who improve to 2-1 and will travel to play Eastern Maine Technical College today at noon.
MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Vermont Technical College 88, University of Maine-Augusta 79
RANDOLPH – Three players scored 20-plus points for Vermont Technical College in Saturday's 88-79 men's college basketball victory over the University of Maine-Augusta.
The Green Knights opened up a 47-26 lead at halftime and then fended off a late comeback attempt.
"They came back and closed it to eight points with about 10 minutes left," VTC coach John Dyer said. "And then the lead stayed between 8 and 12 points most of the way and then in the end we were able to get our bench in."
Leading the way for VTC were Marquise King (27 points, five assists), Sean Smith (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Trent Roleau (22 points).
Deon Cheers scored a team-high 27 points for the Moose, who fall to 2-3.
The Green Knights improve to 2-1 and will travel to play Eastern Maine Technical College today.
MEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Saint Anselm's 3, Castleton 2
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Saint Anselm's Mike Nunzianto scored at 19:07 of the second period to cap a three-goal stanza as Castleton State College suffered its second consecutive 3-2 loss to open the men's hockey season on Saturday.
The Spartans fell to 0-2 despite outshooting the hosts 40-20, with Saint Anselm's Alex Wyse stopping 38 shots in a very busy afternoon. Wyse survived eight Castleton power plays as the Spartans went 0-for-8 with the man advantage.
Joe Fernald assisted the decisive goal and the Hawks went on to start their season at 2-0.
Castleton took the early lead at at 10:28 of the first period as Ross Carmichael scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Jeremy Hilliard.
The Hawks knotted the score at 6:38 of the second as Tom Kerwin took advantage of a power-play opportunity to score his second goal in as many days with assists from Coleman Noonan and Brian Hartigan.
Noonan lit the lamp for his second of the season at 12:12, aided by Zachary Feiden. Castleton cut the margin to 3-2 at 18:58 of the third as Omar Pacha scored his first goal of the year with an assist from Stuart Stefan.
Castleton's Jeff Swanson finished with 17 saves.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday in the opening round of the second annual Rutland Herald Invitational at Rutland Regional Fieldhouse. Neumann will face Becker in the tournament opener at 3 p.m., while the host Spartans will play their home opener against Brockport State at 6 p.m.
Middlebury 9, Tufts 0
MIDDLEBURY – The 2-0 Panthers scored five first-period goals at Kenyon Arena. Middlebury showered 47 shots on Tufts against the Jumbos' 18 and Panthers goalie Doug Raeder stopped all 18 to earn the shutout.
Middlebury came out firing in the first period, scoring four unanswered goals on 18 shots. Martin Drolet opened the scoring with some great stickwork down the middle before finishing with a shot past Scott Barchard. Bryan Curran made it a 2-0 game with a blast on a one-time feed from Mason Graddock. Ken Suchoski finished off a flurry in front for a power-play goal at 7:56 before John Sullivan finished down low for a 4-0 lead at the 12:15 mark. Tucker Donahoe scored the final goal of the period with 1:32 remaining.
Martin Drolet scored with a shot up high on the power play just 32 seconds into the second period, before Charlie Townsend made it a 7-0 game. Sullivan netted his second of the contest later in the period, before Jamie McKenna scored the game's final goal on a power play 11:36 into the third.
Graddock ended the game with four assists, while Ken Suchoski had three. Sullivan and Drolet each scored twice, while Curran and McKenna each had a goal and an assist.
The Panthers will host the Primelink Great Northern Shootout on Friday and Saturday, facing Thomas in the first round. Norwich will face Plattsburgh State in the other first-round game.
University of Southern Maine 6, Saint Michael's 2
SOUTH BURLINGTON – Dan Gordon and Dan Rautenberg each tallied a goal and an assist for Southern Maine in an ECAC East victory over the Purple Knights at Cairns Arena.
Jon Rutt assisted on three scores for the Huskies (1-1, 1-1 ECAC East) and Eric Morgani, Chris Travis, Brett Kapteina and Zach Joy had their first scores of the season.
Dave Vorozilchak and Chris Healey scored their first goals of the season for Saint Michael's (0-2, 0-2 ECAC East).
Saint Michael's is back in action on Tuesday, when the Purple Knights return to Cairns Arena to face Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption College at 7 p.m.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Holy Cross 5, Castleton 1
WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman forward Nicola Garat scored two goals as Holy Cross defeated Castleton State in ECAC East action at Hart Center. The Crusaders improve to 5-0-1 (5-0-1 ECAC) while the Spartans fall to 2-5-0 (2-4-0 ECAC).
Holy Cross scored the only goal of the first period when junior Kathryn O'Connor took a pass from junior Wendy Nobrega and scored from the slot. The goal, scored at the 16:24 mark, was O'Connor's first of the season.
The Crusaders scored early in the second period when freshman Kylee McIntosh sent a pass up the ice to Garat for a breakaway. It was Garat's first goal of the season and the first of her career. Castleton State's Mary Anne Diehm scored at the 2:58 mark to cut the lead in half, but Holy Cross responded with a power play goal at the 5:19 mark. Senior Stephanie Couzin scored her sixth goal of the season from in the slot to give the Crusaders the 3-1 lead.
Holy Cross controlled the third period, scoring goals by sophomore Jocelyn Kratchmer (her eighth) and Garat.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Atkinson had 12 saves, while Castleton's Kalla Robb had 33. Holy Cross outshot Castleton 38-13 and went 2-5 on the power play, while Castleton went 0-2.
Plattsburgh 3, Middlbury 2 (Shootout)
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State Cardinals beat Middlebury in a shootout to win the Panther/Cardinal Classic. The teams tied 2-2 in regulation time, with Grace Waters and Nora Bergman scoring for Middlebury and Danielle Blanchard and Amber Ellis scoring for the hosts.
Lexi Bloom made 36 saves in goal for Middlebury, while Danielle Beattie made 19 stops for Plattsburgh.
Third-ranked Middlebury beat No. 1 Elmira in the opening round on Friday. Plattsburgh is ranked No. 2.

capture NCAA championship
HANOVER, Ind. – The Panthers won their fifth NCAA Championship with a convincing victory. The Panthers previously won titles in 2000, '01, '03 and '06, earning the 29th national title for Middlebury College since 1995.
Along with the eight NCAA men's hockey titles, women's cross country, women's lacrosse and women's hockey have each won five national crowns at Middlebury.
The Panthers ended the race with 179 points, 59 points ahead of second-place Calvin (237). Williams (240), Wartburg (284) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (310) rounded out the top five.
Senior Alexandra Krieg, who earned a top-10 finish for the third straight year, led the Panthers in sixth place with a time of 21:14, 21 seconds off the winning pace. Sophomore Hannah Meier finished the race in 39th place (21:52) for the Panthers.
Behind Krieg and Meier were three runners who won a title in their first fall on campus. Elise Moody-Roberts came in 57th place (22:04) in the 279-woman race, followed by Claire McIlvennie in 78th place (22:16). Margo Kramer was next for the Panthers in 98th place (22:29) overall to round out Middlebury's scorers.
MEN'S COLLEGE SOCCER
Middlebury 1, Carleton 0
HOBOKEN, N.J. – Middlebury advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals with Saturday's 1-0 win over Carleton.
The Panthers now advance to meet either Stevens Institute or Johns Hopkins today at 6 p.m. with a trip to the Final Four on the line.
Along with last year's five NCAA Tournament shutouts, the Panthers have not allowed a goal in their last eight NCAA Tournament games, a span of 780 minutes. The team's last NCAA tourney goal allowed was in a 2-1 loss to St. Lawrence in 2006.
Rookie Tyler Macnee recorded his 13th goal of the season at the 82-minute mark. Baer Fisher earned the assist on the goal with a centering pass to Macnee. The assist was the 22nd of Fisher's career, tying the Middlebury record.
Carleton could not get a shot off in over 85 minutes of play and the Knights were held to just one shot on the night.
Middlebury goalie Brian Bush earned the shutout for the Panthers, marking his 12th clean sheet of the season and the 26th of his career.
