Norwich women's hoop scores win over Husson

GORHAM, Maine — Junior guard Erica Rate poured in a game-high 23 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead Norwich past Husson, 68-54, in a first round game of the USM Tip-Off Tournament at the Warren Hill Gymnasium Friday night.
The win moves the Cadets (2-0) into Saturday afternoon's championship game, where they will face the University of Southern Maine Huskies at 3 p.m. The Huskies punched their ticket into the championship game with a 76-57 victory over the Maine-Farmington Beavers in Friday night's second game. The Eagles (1-1) will take on the Beavers in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
Rate connected on 8-of-18 shots from the floor, including 7-of-14 from beyond the three-point arc, for her 23 points. Senior guard Kayleigh Shappy was the only other Cadet to reach double figures with 10 points coming on a three-pointer and seven free throws.
The game was nip and tuck throughout with both teams enjoying small leads. After a basket by Noelle Lincoln to tie the score at 46-46 with 8:36 to go, the Cadets put together a decisive 13-0 run to take command. Rookie forward Tara Stevenson gave the Cadets the lead for good with a basket in the paint. Two free throws by junior guard Natalie Marchese, followed by a pair of three-pointers from Rate pushed the margin to 10 (56-46) with 6:49 to play. The Eagles hurt their chances missing a pair of shots and committing three turnovers in five possessions.
Sophomore forward Laurel McWilliams continued the Cadets' surge with a three-point play before Bree Hanscom stopped the bleeding with a layup. The Cadets got two free throws from freshman guard Kayla Whitman and a basket from junior guard Ally Daniels to gain their biggest lead of the night, 63-48, with 3:41 to play.
The Eagles had the better shooting percentage, hitting 38 percent (23-of-60) of their shots, but were hurt by 25 turnovers. The Cadets made only 33 percent (22-of-66) of their shots, but made 8-of-22 three-point tries and turned the ball over just 13 times. The Eagles won the battle of the boards, 45-36.
The Eagles were led by Hanscom, Lincoln and Shelby Bradford as each contributed 12 points. Bradford finished the night with a double-double by also grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
N.C. Wesleyan 85, Norwich 51
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Trey Drake scored a game-high 20 points, and Jarmel Arrington and Lamont Stokes each netted 12 points apiece to lead North Carolina Wesleyan to an 85-51 victory over Norwich in a men's basketball game Friday evening.
Adam Coleman added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bishops, who improve to 3-0 on the young season. Norwich was led by Tim Fico, who scored a team-high 14 points. Joshua Cabrera added 10 points for the Cadets, who fall to 0-4 on the year.
North Carolina Wesleyan jumped out to an 8-2 lead just 1:19 into the first half. A quick 5-2 spurt by Norwich brought the Cadets to within 10-7 at the 17:58 mark. The Bishops used a 6-0 run over the next 2:34 to build a 16-7 edge with 15:24 to play in the first half. A three-pointer by Fico closed the gap to 16-10, but a 15-6 spurt by North Carolina Wesleyan gave the Bishops a 31-16 lead near the midway point of the frame.
A lay-up by Mike Filipek and a jumper by Fico made it a 31-20 spread, but North Carolina Wesleyan closed the half on a 21-6 run to take a 52-26 lead into halftime.
The Bishops started the second half on a 10-2 run to open up a 62-28 lead at the 14:37 mark. The Cadets trimmed the deficit down to 24 points on two occasions, but they were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
Norwich turned the ball over 28 times, while North Carolina Wesleyan committed just 18 miscues. The Cadets were outrebounded, 53-35, in the game.
Norwich returns to action on today when the Cadets take on Methodist at 1 p.m.
Middlebury 61, RSC 58
PURCHASE, N.Y. — Middlebury moved to 4-0 on the year with a win over Richard Stockton College at the Manhattanville Tournament. The Panthers return to action today in the championship game of the tournament at 8 p.m.
Middlebury trailed 15-6 at the 9:39 mark of the first half before going on a 9-0 run to tie the game. The game was tied three more times in the first half before the Panthers took a six-point lead into the locker room at 28-22.
Middlebury led by as many as 13 in the second half before Richard Stockton went on a 16-2 run over a four-minute span to take a 44-43 lead with 7:42 left to play.
The Panthers went on an 8-2 spurt, behind five points from Aaron Smith, to take a 58-50 lead with 3:37 remaining. The lead grew to nine before a two and two three's from Richard Stockton cut the lead to one with 1:19 left to play.
The Ospreys had a chance to tie the game with 20 seconds left, but missed a pair of free throws. Ben Rudin sealed the game for the Panthers four seconds later by knocking down a pair as a last second three failed for Richard Stockton.
Rudin led the team with 14 points to go along with four assists, Edwards netted nine with five boards and four assists, while Ryan Sharry scored eight with five rebounds.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY
Holy Cross 3, Norwich 2
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore forward Jocelyn Kratchmer scored two goals and had one assist as Holy Cross defeated Norwich, 3-2, in ECAC East women's ice hockey game Friday evening at the Hart Center.
Holy Cross(4-0-1, 4-0-1 ECAC East) scored early in the first period, at the 6:36 mark, when Kratchmer scored. Kratchmer took a pass from junior defenseman Lisa Wilson, giving Holy Cross an early 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, at the 8:47 mark, freshman forward Stacey Hochkins gained control of the puck off a rebound and scored Holy Cross' second goal of the game.
In the second period Norwich (3-4-0, 3-2-0 ECAC East) cut Holy Cross' lead in half when Melissa Rundlett scored at the 5:02 mark. Less than 13 minutes later, at the 18:08 mark, Holy Cross answered back when Kratchmer took a pass from senior forward Stephanie Couzin to score a breakaway goal, giving the Crusaders the 3-1 lead. Norwich responded just six seconds later with a goal by Julie Fortier, bringing the Cadets to within one, 3-2.
A defense-dominated third period gave the Crusaders a 3-2 league victory.
Carly Dominick-Sobol got the win in goal for the Crusaders. Dominick-Sobol had 12 saves and allowed two goals. Norwich goaltender Cindy Fortin had 16 saves and allowed three goals. Holy Cross was 1-for-6 on the power play, while Norwich went 0-for-6. The Crusaders outshot the Cadets, 19-14.
The Cadets return to action on Friday, Dec. 5, when they host Nichols College at Kreitzberg Arena. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Castleton 1, Nichols 0
HARRISVILLE, R.I. — the Spartans won their second straight game, nipping Nichols in ECAC East action at June R. Levy Rink. Adrianna Riggio's late first-period goal stood up as the game-winner, and netminder Kalla Robb turned aside 40 shots to pick up her second shutout on the season.
Nichols (0-6-0, 0-5-0 ECAC) held a commanding 40-14 shot advantage, including a 16-7 lead in the opening stanza, but the Spartans (2-5-0, 2-3-0 ECAC) capitalized at 17:41 of the first period when Riggio potted a goal on a two-on-one break with Amy Costa after a chip-ahead pass from Denise Cardello.
Kayla Robidoux led Nichols with seven shots, including one off the faceoff late in the third when Nichols pulled netminder Melissa Mansfield (13 saves) while on the power play for a six-on-four advantage.
Castleton travels to Holy Cross for a 2 p.m. game today while Nichols will look for its first win of the season at Norwich on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.
Middlebury 2, Elmira 1
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Middlebury moved to 2-0 on the season, knocking off the No. 1 team in the nation in the process at the Panther/Cardinal Classic at Plattsburgh. The Panthers entered the game ranked third in the early going, while Elmira was in the top spot.
Annmarie Cellino gave the third-ranked Panthers a 1-0 lead with just 1:53 left in the first period, netting her second goal of the season. Elmira tied the game with a power play goal from Kayla Coady at 16:34, before Molly Vitt scored the game-winner on a power play 4:10 into the third period.
Middlebury will now face No. 2 Plattsburgh State, a 4-2 winner over Williams, in the championship game today at 3:30 p.m.
MEN'S HOCKEY
New England 3, Castleton 2
HENNIKER, N.H. — The Castleton men's hockey team's frustration against New England College continued Friday night as the Pilgrims scored a 3-2 ECAC East overtime victory, thwarting the Spartans' opportunity to win their first game against NEC.
Castleton held a 2-1 lead late in the game but New England tied it with 30 seconds remaining to send the contest into overtime.
The Spartans put on considerable pressure in the extra period and rendered several shots, but could not find the net. The Pilgrims broke out and Jimmy Pouliot ended it with his third point of the night on NEC's first shot of the overtime.
Trevor Turner gave New England a 1-0 lead on the power play at 7:09 of the first from Pouliot, but Ryan Bartlett tied for CSC at 5:10 of the second unassisted.
The Spartans took the lead at 17:08 of the third when Jeff Alexander scored from Bartlett and Jared Lavender, but Pouliot knotted it from Alex Muse and Per Thunberg at 19:30.
Jay Seals made 18 saves for the Spartans, who will face St. Anselm in Manchester, N.H., today at 4 p.m. Aaron Harvey stopped 17 shots for the Pilgrims, who will host St. Michael's, a 5-0 loser to St. Anselm.
Middlebury 4, Conn. College 2
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury picked up the victory over Connecticut College in the season-opener for both teams. The Panthers trailed 2-1 before scoring three goals, as they outshot the Camels 14-5 in the third period and 33-22 on the night.
Middlebury opened the scoring 9:05 into the first period as John Sullivan's shot found the back of the net off a defender's skate for a power-play goal. The Camels tied the game just 1:24 later as Sean Driscoll won a faceoff to Brett Moore, who quickly snapped a shot past Middlebury rookie netminder John Yanchek.
Connecticut College took a 2-1 lead into the intermission with a power-play goal with just 16 seconds remaining. Trevor Bradley carried the puck around the back of the net and quickly found Ryan Riffe on the far post and he buried the shot.
The Panthers tied the game just 2:53 into the second period as Sullivan netted his second of the game, tipping in a shot by Michael Kretchmer on the power play. Mason Graddock gave Middlebury its first lead of the night at 2:01 as he scored on the power play after several shots. The Panthers gained some breathing room with a five-on-three power-play tally by Jamie McKenna with some nice passing from Chaz Svoboda and Michael Kretschmer.
