RUTLAND (AP) — A rail spur under Route 7 is being recommended to alleviate truck traffic between marble processor Omya Inc.'s quarry in Middlebury and its calcium carbonate plant in Pittsford.

An environmental impact statement issued by the Vermont Agency of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration says the $34 million spur, which would run 3.3 miles and cross under Route 7, would alleviate congestion on Route 7 and from village centers and local roads.

Sandra Levine, a lawyer for the Conservation Law Foundation, which supports the idea, says the spur would help improve safety and reduce pollution.
