MONTPELIER – The Montpelier Community Gospel Choir, an ecumenical community choir which draws members from 19 Vermont towns, will be giving two concerts in November:
Vermont is hardly thought of as a hotbed for the black southern tradition of gospel music, but director John Harrison, of Plainfield, who has led the choir since 1995, says the area is rich with people who "want to experience and share the power of singing traditional gospel music." The MCGC, central Vermont's only gospel choir, is comprised of members from numerous religious and musical backgrounds who can produce a sound that reaches from deep within their souls to touch their audiences in a powerful way. Combining soul, jazz, original and traditional gospel music, the choir produces a toe-tapping, hand-clapping, knee-slapping, aisle-swaying and seat-thumping, exuberant sound. The choir's mission is to share with the community the joy, hope and inspiration it experiences through music. Band members who will accompany the choir: Jeff Guerin on piano, Phil Carr on drums, Max Bronstein-Paritz on guitar and organ, John Ryan on bass, Brian Boyes on organ and trumpet, and Zach Tonnissen on saxophone and percussion.
The Brattleboro concert will benefit the Brattleboro Area Pastoral Counseling Center. No admission is charged; however, free-will offerings taken in Montpelier. For more information, call John Harrison at (802) 454-8403, or go online to www.vtgospel.com.
