COVENTRY — A 21-year-old Newport man is facing criminal charges stemming from the shooting and wounding of a hunter in the town of Coventry.
Vermont State Police says James Rowell thought he was shooting at a deer when he shot and hit 32-year-old Theron Willard of Anchorage, Alaska, in the lower extremities just before dark on Tuesday afternoon.
Police say that Rowell heard screaming after he fired the shot and then went to help.
Police say Willard was taken to North Country Hospital in Newport and then transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., where he is listed in stable condition.
Rowell was cited into court on a charge of reckless endangerment.
