Middlebury tops Norwich men's basketball

COLCHESTER — Ben Rudin scored a game-high 12 points and snared nine rebounds, and Aaron Smith netted nine points and ripped down 11 rebounds to lead Middlebury past Norwich 59-41 in a men's basketball game Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Doubletree Doc Jacobs Classic at St. Michael's College.
Norwich (0-2) scored the first four points of the game, before Middlebury (2-0) rattled off a 14-2 run to assume a 14-6 lead at the 11:06 mark.
Back-to-back three-pointers by freshmen Kyle McQuarrie of Proctor and Joshua Cabrera sliced the Panthers' lead down to two points at 14-12 with 10:01 to play before halftime.
Middlebury responded with a 13-3 run over the next 6:31 to open up a 27-15 lead with 3:30 on the first half clock.
The Panthers maintained a double digit lead throughout the remainder of the opening stanza, and took a 32-19 advantage into halftime.
Middlebury used a 15-8 scoring run over the first 8:31 of the second half to build a 47-27 lead at the 11:29 mark. Norwich was unable to get any closer than 14 points the rest of the way, en route to its second consecutive loss.
The Cadets were led by freshman forward Antonio Davis, who scored a team-high eight points and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds. McQuarrie finished with seven points, while fellow freshman Andrew Menzie had six.
Norwich opens its 2008-09 home schedule on Tuesday when the Cadets host Plattsburgh State at Andrews Hall. Gametime is slated for 7 p.m.
In the nightcap, Saint Michael's earned a 65-62 victory over Bloomsburg University. Senior Jon Zylstra, the tournament Most Valuable Player, had 11 second-half points to help Saint Michael's hold off Bloomsburg. The win was the 159th for 12th-year Saint Michael's head coach Tom O'Shea, tying the program record held by George "Doc" Jacobs.
