Norwich women double up Southern Maine, 4-2

NORTHFIELD – Sophie Leclerc, Julie Fortier, Kelsey Cone and Melissa Rundlett all scored goals, and Cindy Fortin made 20 saves in the Cadets' goal to lead the Norwich University women's ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Southern Maine in an ECAC East contest Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.

Norwich (3-3-0, 3-1-0 ECAC East) opened the scoring midway through the opening stanza as Leclerc scored an unassisted short-handed goal at 9:25 of the first period. The Cadets outshot the Huskies, 8-5, in the first period, but they settled for a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Norwich returns to action on Friday when the Cadets travel to Worcester, Mass., to tangle with ECAC East foe Holy Cross. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.



WOMEN'S HOCKEY

Castleton 4, Plymouth 0

RUTLAND – The Castleton State College women skated to its first win of the season in ECAC East action at Rutland Regional Fieldhouse. Castleton returns to action Friday at Nichols College in an ECAC East matchup.



Princeton 3, Vermont 1

PRINCETON, N.J. — Senior goalie Ashley Walenty made a season-high 33 saves but a three-goal second period gave Princeton a 3-1 victory over Vermont in non-league women's college hockey action Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Vermont takes a nine-day break from action next playing against Hockey East rival Maine at the Androscoggin Bank Colisιe in Lewiston, Maine on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m.



MEN'S ICE HOCKEY

Norwich 7,

Southern New Hampshire 2

NORTHFIELD – Seven different Cadets scored goals, including a pair of newcomers, as the Norwich University men's ice hockey team defeated Southern New Hampshire, 7-2, in an exhibition game Saturday.

The Cadets officially open their 2008-09 campaign next weekend (Nov. 21-22) when they host ECAC East rivals Southern Maine and Salem State at Kreitzberg Arena.



MEN'S SOCCER

Rochester 2, Castleton 0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rochester got a goal from Sean Hantes in the first half and one from Steve Welles in the second to defeat Castleton State College in the opening round of the NCAA soccer tournament.



MEN'S BASKETBALL

George Mason 80, Vermont 79, OT

BURLINGTON — Darryl Monroe hit a pair of free throws with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to lift George Mason to an 80-79 victory over the University of Vermont men's basketball team on Saturday.

Junior Marqus Blakely led all scorers with 24 points, but it wasn't enough as the Cats drop their regular season opener.

The Catamounts led 79-78 after a lay-up by senior Mike Trimboli with 1:13 to go and Vermont got the ball back with just over 27 seconds left, but a five-second violation on the attempted inbounds gave Mason a second chance. Monroe missed a lay-up but got his own rebound and was fouled in a loose ball situation, sending him to the line to shoot a pair.

Vermont is back in action on Tuesday at home when the Catamounts host Yale at 7 p.m.



St. Michael's 78, Norwich 40

COLCHESTER – Saint Michael's College posted a win at the DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic in season-opening men's basketball action on Saturday. In the nightcap, Saint Michael's rolled to a 78-40 win against Norwich.

Four players scored in double figures for Saint Michael's, led by freshman Alex Berthiaume's 15 points, five assists and five steals.

For the Cadets, sophomore Jaren Jeffcoat had 10 points. Norwich shot just 29 percent from the field in the game, including 1-of-15 from 3-point territory.

The DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic concludes today as Middlebury and Norwich square off at 3 p.m., followed by Saint Michael's and Bloomsburg at 5 p.m.



VTC 94, Unity 34

RANDOLPH CENTER — Michael Nowlan scored 29 and Marquis King tossed in 21 as Vermont Technical College routed Unity College of Maine 94-34 in men's basketball Saturday. It was the season opener for the Green Knight men who host Eastern Maine Technical College at 3 p.m. today.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Norwich 62, Plattsburgh State 55

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Jess Jaggars registered a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, and Ally Daniels and Christine Daniels each netted 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Norwich University women's basketball team to a 62-55 victory over Plattsburgh State on Saturday.

Norwich will return to action next weekend (Nov. 21 and 22) when the Cadets travel to Portland, Maine, to take part in the Southern Maine Invitational.

NU will face Husson on Friday, Nov. 21, at 5:30 p.m.



Unity 44, VTC 42

RANDOLPH CENTER — Eliza Wakefield scored 15 points in the second half, but Vermont Technical College fell short in its comeback bid and dropped a 44-42 decision to Unity College in women's basketball on Saturday.

Wakefield finished with 19 points to lead all scorers and Jinny Purrier added 10 for the 0-1 Green Knights.

Unity got 12 points from Tiffany Dorsey. VTC hosts Eastern Maine Technical College at 1 p.m. today.







COLLEGE SWIMMING & DIVING

Vermont 174, Maine 117

BURLINGTON — The University of Vermont swimming and diving team defeated visiting Maine 174-117 in America East action on Saturday afternoon at Forbush Natatorium.

The Catamounts won the first 12 events of the meet and took the top two spots in the first five as they improve to 5-1-1 on the year overall and 3-1 in league play. Junior Colleen Clark paced Vermont with three wins on the day.

"Today was an incredible meet and I am proud of all of our ladies. It was great to be home and the team fed off of that excitement. We are now looking forward to our meet against New Hampshire," said Vermont coach Gerry Cournoyer.

The Catamounts broke four pool records on the afternoon, including the first three events of the day. Vermont opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay with the team made up of Kate Weaver of South Burlington, Caitlin Dowd, Avery Pittman and Clark in a Forbush record time of 3:57.80. Junior Molly MacMillan followed with a win in the 1,000 free (10:22.71) and Clark earned the first of her three in the 200 free (1:53.47), each breaking pool marks.

Clark would also earn first place finishes in the 50 (24.98) and 100 (54.15) freestyle events. Weaver took the 100 back in a time of 58.02 and also earned a new pool record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.40. Senior Ashley Gillespie led a 1-2 finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.58.

Five freshmen also earned individual wins for Vermont, as Dowd was the first by taking the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:09.00. Pittman followed in the next event to finish first in the 200 butterfly (2:10.25), while Charlotte Ford won the one-meter dive (214.78), Kaitlyn Evarts of Vergennes took the top spot in the 200 backstroke (2:11.79) and Katie Heenan of was victorious in the 500 free (5:09.08). The Catamounts return to action on Dec. 6 when they host America East rival New Hampshire at noon.



FIELD HOCKEY

Middlebury 5, Lebanon Valley 2

BRUNSWICK Maine – Middlebury's Chase Delano scored three goals to lead the Panthers field hockey team in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at Bowdoin College. The Panthers (14-3) advance to play the host Polar Bears into today's regional final in a rematch of the 2007 National Championship game. Delano's three goals improve her season total to 26, setting a new Middlebury single-season record.
