WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A Springfield man denied charges he stole and cashed a Social Security check to buy crack cocaine.
Stanley C. Whittaker, 53, pleaded innocent Tuesday in White River Junction District Court to a felony charge of forgery.
According to an affidavit filed with the court, on Sept. 8, Sheena Thurston, 25, of Springfield, called police to complain Whittaker had stolen her Social Security check for $689.
Court records state police interviewed Whittaker, who admitted stealing the check and cashing it at Chittenden Bank on Main Street in Springfield. Whittaker reportedly told police he did not remember how much the check was for, but he did remember using the money to buy crack cocaine, according to court records.
After pleading innocent, Whittaker was released without bail on the condition he not contact Thurston. Whittaker is facing 10 years in prison if convicted.
