BURLINGTON — Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama is the leading fund-raiser in Vermont, raising almost three times as much money in the state as other presidential hopefuls, Democrat or Republican.

Campaign finance records show that the Illinois senator raised $46,271 in Vermont during the first quarter. Obama's donations were made by 41 Vermonters, more than four times the number of donors who gave to other campaigns.

Second on the Vermont fund raising list was former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who collected $16,600 in Vermont from 10 donors, records show.

Among Democratic candidates, Sen. Hillary Clinton, of New York, raised $5,050 in Vermont from 10 donors. Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards received $3,075 from eight donors.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona raised $9,050 in Vermont with donations from 10 residents. Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani received $7,400 from five Vermont donors.

Nationally, Obama raised $24.8 million from 104,000 donors.

Vermonters for Obama has formed 10 grassroots groups with 213 members in all, said organizer Neil Jensen of Monkton.

Other candidates are just organizing their operations in Vermont.
