Bike Ride draws nude riders, lookers-on

MONTPELIER – Naked cyclists brought smiles to the faces of hundreds of sidewalk spectators Saturday as free-spirited riders spread a message of bike and body love.

No fewer than 42 men and women (and two appropriately clothed children) spun a well-watched path down Main Street early afternoon en route to the Statehouse. Aside from some body paint preaching the ills of oil dependency and the beauty of the bicycle, the crew for the most part bared all.

“It’s definitely an important issue, but it’s all in good fun,” said co-organizer Will Roberts.

The Montpelier event, part of World Naked Bike Ride, sought to promote bicyclists’ rights as a means of mitigating the nation’s fossil-fuel dependency. Roberts said the event is also about “healthy body awareness.”

“We’re promoting all these ideas in a completely absurd, ridiculous way,” he said.

Literally hundreds of spectators, some aware the event was happening and others most definitely not, couldn’t stop smiling as the naked cyclists, in-line skaters and skateboarder passed by. Nudity is perfectly legal in Vermont, however disrobing in public is not. The participants met at a Barre Street bike shop before the ride to change into their birthday suits before taking to the streets.

“It’s more non-confrontational when you’re naked,” said Montpelier resident and co-organizer Jill Cichoski. “When you’re naked, people can’t get angry at you when you’re telling them what to do.”

Cichoski said the event is for all comers.

“We want all ages, all body types,” she said.

Among the more senior riders was Ross Stevenson, a Poultney man who spent time in the staging area painting an anti-car sign on his belly.

“Basically, I’m a nudist,” the 77-year-old Stevenson said.

His wife, Nancy, is not.

“I will be seeing him off and then watching from the street,” she said.

The couple was celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary.

Benjamin Degenhart, a 22-year-old German man in town for a three-week visit, said the event combined a number of his favorite pastimes.

“I like to be naked. I like to ride my bike. I like the community aspect of it,” Degenhart said. “… Naked bike riding brings me to people I feel connected with. It’s an intersection of people with interests that resonate with me.”

Longtime City Councilor Jim Sheridan captured the ride for posterity on his digital Nikon. He’ll be including the photograph in a grant-funded publication that includes pictures documenting life in the capital city.

“Every photo is going to say ‘Montpelier’ in some way,” Sheridan said.

Kim Hendy first witnessed the naked bike ride by accident last year. Now she can’t get enough.

“It’s really cool,” the Northfield woman said. “It’s not gross or obnoxious at all.”

The Montpelier event is something of a happy accident. In 2007, Roberts, Cichoski and co-organizer Jen Dole ventured to Burlington, then the only place in Vermont with an official naked bike ride. They got the start time wrong, though, and ended missing the group.

“We said, ‘Let’s just go to Montpelier and have our own damn ride,’” Roberts said.

The three of them rode naked through the streets, attracting an appreciative crowd along the way. The pioneering trio’s courage has spawned an increasingly popular summer tradition. And Roberts hopes the event will cement bikers’ rights in Montpelier and beyond.

“If I can get up on my bike and ride naked,” Roberts said, “then anybody else should be able to do it clothed.”

Wow, never thought I'd see people get so upset about something as innocent as this. They are perfectly within the law, whether or not you like it.....also I'm really confused about how this could be connected to socialism or anything else for that matter. It's a harmless event that is set up in advandce and registered with the city. If you're so uncomfortable with nudity nododys is making you go watch it. Compared to the rest of the problems facing this state and the rest of the world for that matter, I find it incredible that people get so worked up over this.

AYK sez: "Again, yes, if this NBR thing so so noble, why isnt[sic] there more anywhere or all over the state or just any day in Montpelier?

AYK, your continued expressions of ignorance inspire me to provide you with a link that should help you understand the widespread nature of naked bike riding around the globe. This website lists countries where the ride as a form of expression is practiced. Looking deeper, you can even click on the names of the countries and get another list of the cities within the country where rides have been organized.

Happy cycling!

Why doesnt the Cancer Society or Diabetes or any other big bike ride have riders that spend hundreds outfitting themselves with clothes and shoes, and these idiots take off their clothes?
Again, yes, if this NBR thing so so noble, why isnt there more anywhere or all over the state or just any day in Montpelier? or Barre?

Response to Kneepads None:

No, they did not ride their bikes into the church, they allegedly rode by the church, which was conducting an OUTDOOR funeral and requested the ride route or time be changed. Repeat: THEY requested it, I'm not speaking for them.

Put yourselves in the shoes of those grieving. Would you want such a distraction passing by only a few feet away from the service? I sure wouldn't. Sure, there's traffic on the street anyway, but it's not trying to draw attention to itself. There's a difference.

I'm a cyclist (75,000 lifetime miles) and I approved this message.

"Because, its a nutty, kooky fruitloop thing to do, just some liberals trying to get more attention"

Says a person who spends all night and day posting ridiculous comments on the local papers website so he can get people ****** off enough to respond to those posts. Yeah. He should be criticizing people for trying to get attention, for going outside when he is doing the online equivalent of shaving his head into a mow hawk and dying it bright pink. Then again, why I am feeding the troll?

If this was such an honorable, non-offenseive thing to do, why hide in Montpelier? Why arent they riding from Montpelier on Route 2 all the way to Burlington or just ride where ever or whenever if this was such a peaceful thing to do? Why not just all go for a ride down all of the state and town roads??
Because, its a nutty, kooky fruitloop thing to do, just some liberals trying to get more attention, otherwise they'd be riding all over the state and not making routes or closing off streets.

Hey John Kirby -

So what if they rode past a funeral? Did they ride their bikes into the church? Should we just ban all traffic - car, bike and pedestrian within a 100 yard radius of all churches when funerals are going on out of "respect for the dead?" C'mon. Get real.

I don't see how that event in 2008 was at all disrespecting anyone.

The article says the event is to promote cycling, a healthy body image and reducing depending on fossil fuel, in "a completely absurd and ridiculous way."

This is socialism? I didn't realize conservatives were against promoting a healthy body image, reducing our dependence on fossil fuel, and OMG, bicycle riding! As Melissa B. pointed out it's perfectly legal.

PS-- One good thing about this year's ride: It didn't roll past an outdoor funeral as it reportedly did in '08. As reported by WCAX, last year Christ Church in Montpelier requested the ride either change its route or time, but the NBR organizers resisted, saying the ride was planned in advance and couldn't be changed. Well, maybe they couldn't change it, but they could sure cancel or reschedule it OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE DEAD. But I guess that never occurred to them. All I know is that if I were putting one of my family in the ground and the NBR rolled by despite my wishes, things would have gotten very ugly. And I'm a cyclist.

I've been a cyclist for 25 years and I don't own a car . . . and I would never dream of taking part in something like this. Well-intentioned as the Naked Bike Ride may be, it merely amounts to a rolling freak show. For one thing, spreading "body love" is something best achieved behind closed doors. But as far as advancing the cause of cycling, a stunt like this only reinforces the notion that cyclists are a fringe minority. How many people did the Naked Bike Ride convert that day? Bemusement and titillation don't sell bikes.

Let them exploit their little loophole in Vermont's nudity law and ride around in circles. Meanwhile, real cyclists like myself will quietly continue going about our business.

If you libs had a clue - you'd be asking WHY your 'Messiah' doesn't pull a 1971 Nixonian PRICE-FREEZE on Gas Prices - instead of Gas-Price run-ups - that will easily NEGATE ANY CHANCES of ECONOMIC RECOVERY - thus making Obama's Nationalization of GM, Chrysler & CitiBank even more WORTHLESS than their bailout chances are now!

If any of you out-of-work STREAKERS realized how high gas prices decrease other spending - then you might know why many of you can't find any jobs - as the recent run-up in GAS PRICES - coupled with Bush allowing consumers & the economy to be destroyed by GREEDY OIL Companies & NOW Obama doing nothing to rein in this unabashed OIL COMPANY SCAM - as millions of disposal dollars are diverted AWAY from other businesses - thus costing Americans jobs!

Walt, that last flight of fancy had me laughing so hard my glasses fell off--

If only people could get as upset at environmental destruction, poverty, and the oppression of fellow human beings by other alleged human beings as they do at a nude bike ride.

As for children being mortified by same: most children would have trouble getting beyond the "ick" factor. Mortification requires something beyond an instantaneous reaction of "ewwwww," to quote one of the posters . . .

If the worst thing my kids or grandkids ever see is a bunch of grownups being silly while naked, I don't feel that they're in much danger. I'd rather they see the nude bike ride than some of the porn available via satellite or on the internet! At least the nude bikers were keeping their hands and their naked parts to themselves . . .

This Vermont granny says: Ride on!

Pandora - I recommend a scented leather conditioner; forced marriage to a gay socialist; mandated public nudity; and alienating children with the sight of - gasp - breasts. People should be rounded up and "charged with something", perhaps L & L, maybe a new crime called "something". Bombardment with tushies and ******s will replace diplomacy whenever and wherever possible and naked images of Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich rutting like horny manatees will be implanted in the brains of liberals until their heads melt............that should do it.

I have a huge problem with this. Anyone with children unknowingly passed through while this was going on must have been mortified. It is one this to be at home and see Mommy skip from the bathroom in her bra and undies to having them see complete strangers bare it all in downtown Montpelier. I think they should be charged with something. Political agenda or not it is simply wrong. I was not in Montpelier that day and I am glad because it is not something I cared to see. However there I was Sunday morning sitting down to read my paper when boom right on the front of the Local section I was bombarded with some womans naked ass and some dudes *****. EEEWWW!!!

Raul - How would you theorize a political agenda by how much someone was wearing? Or decide that the naked bike ride had anything to do with the government telling anyone anything? "You can call it socialism, liberalism, communism".... what in God's name does that even mean? You probably could just as easily call it a harmless little diversion and get on with your life but that would be too sensible, eh?

Well, these guys like to show 'em and have a lot of time on their hands. It may sound funny, but it's all part of a political agenda. Matter of fact, they want a government that orders people what to ride, what to eat, what to wear; impose gay marriage, etc. You can call that socialism, liberalism, communism. It's all the same crap. Believe me, I lived in a "socialist paradise" 44 years. By the way, I ride a motorcycle and will never put my bare arse on her seat.
