BARRE TOWN – Republicans maintained their long-standing stranglehold on two local House seats on Tuesday as incumbents Francis "Topper" McFaun and Tom Koch turned back two feisty Democratic challengers to win re-election.
McFaun and Koch finished one-two in the four-way race for two legislative seats that have been in Republican hands for more than two decades.
McFaun, a two-term lawmaker, received 2,225 votes, followed closely by Koch, who earned his ninth two-year term, with 2,209 votes. Democrats John Pizzo and Guy Isabelle put up a good fight on a day when nearly 75 percent of the town's 5,907 registered voters cast ballots. Pizzo finished with 1,840 votes in the race and Isabelle received 1,551 votes.
According to Town Clerk Donna Kelty, 4,415 voters cast ballots, including a record-setting 1,300 before the polls opened on Tuesday.
