BOLTON Doris M. Callahan, 92, a lifelong resident of Bolton, passed away at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008. Born in Bolton on Oct. 31, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Bertha (Griffin) Atwood. In 1936, Doris married Henry Callahan, who predeceased her in 1971.
Doris was a 1935 graduate of Waterbury High School and during her school years, worked for the Squier family of Waterbury as a nanny. Following her marriage, Doris remained busy and happy as a homemaker and raising her family. Upon the death of her husband, Doris went to work at Howard Johnson's in South Burlington where she enjoyed 20 years of employment as a housekeeper.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed cooking, vegetable gardening and spending time with her large and loving family. Doris was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Richmond.
Doris is survived by her children, Kathy Fleury and her husband, Richard of Middlesex, Ellen Companion of Waterbury Center, James Callahan and Michael Callahan, both of Bolton; her grandchildren, Tom Companion and his wife, Sue of Moretown, John Companion and his wife, Lisa of Waterbury Center, Theresa Gilman and her husband, Rich of Chelsea, Rodney Companion of Waterbury Center, Richard Fleury Jr. and his wife, Heidi of Plainfield, Jason Fleury and his wife, Cathi of Barre, Rachel Wielebski and her husband, Ron of Milwaukee Wis., Matthew Fleury and Henry Fleury, both of Middlesex, and Patrick Fleury and his wife, Angela of Northfield; her great-grandchildren, Jenna Companion of Waterbury Center, Katie Fleury of Barre, Lucas Gilman and Jacob Gilman of Chelsea, Stephen Wielebski, Ronald R. Wielebski and Andrew Wielebski, all of Milwaukee Wis., and Dakota Fleury, Shane Fleury and Tyler Fleury, all of Plainfield; a sister, Eunice Fitzpatrick of Manchester, Conn.; three brothers, Everett Atwood and his wife, Iola of Duxbury, John Atwood of Richmond, and Donald Atwood and his wife, Eleanor of Richmond; her dear friend, neighbor and niece, Sharmayne Atwood and her husband, Bill and their children, Samantha and Billy; a sister-in-law, Mary Reagan of Waterbury; a brother-in-law, Francis Wilder Sr. of Duxbury; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by a daughter, Rebecca McKinstry, a sister, Thelma Ashley and a brother, Orin "Bud" Atwood.
The family wishes to acknowledge the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin for the wonderful care and consideration extended to Doris and her entire family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Richmond on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. with interment to follow in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Richmond. There will be no calling hours.
