Palin: If only people knew how frugal we are'

PITTSBURGH — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin insisted in an interview with the Chicago Tribune on Thursday that she did not accept $150,000 worth of designer clothes from the Republican Party and "that is not who we are."

"That whole thing is just, bad!" she said. "Oh, if people only knew how frugal we are.

"It's kind of painful to be criticized for something when all the facts are not out there and are not reported," said Palin, saying the clothes are not worth $150,000 and were bought for the Republican National Convention. Still, she has been wearing pricey clothes at campaign events this fall. She said they will be given back, auctioned off or sent to charity. Most of them, she said, haven't even left the belly of her campaign plane.

Thrust into the national spotlight as John McCain's running mate in late August from relative obscurity as governor of Alaska, Palin has found herself under the microscope ever since, accused of being inexperienced, a drag on the ticket and, most recently, the recipient of racks of expensive clothes.

Less than two weeks before Election Day, she will deliver her first major policy speech Friday, calling for full funding of special education, a subject that has suddenly become extremely personal. And that's not just because of the arrival of Trig, her 6-month-old son with Down syndrome. It's because families with children who have disabilities have been flocking to her campaign stops, looking to Palin and her family for inspiration.

Palin on Thursday granted one of her first newspaper interviews since becoming McCain's vice presidential nominee. She was joined by her husband, Todd, who cradled Trig, noticeably plumper since he was first introduced to the world two months ago.

Palin called the disabilities issues "a joyful challenge." Todd Palin showed off photos of people with Down syndrome who have come to campaign events, and the candidate said one advocacy group sent her a bumper sticker that said "My kid has more chromosomes than your kid."

"These children are not a problem, they are a priority," Palin said.

"We're on this journey with other families," she said. "We'll learn a lot from those other families, as they can count on us in the White House doing all that we can for them also. It's going to be a nice team effort here."

Still, much of the media attention Palin has received — on the issue of the clothes, for example — has decidedly not been about public policy issues. She points to that as evidence of a bias against women candidates.

"I think Hillary Clinton was held to a different standard in her primary race," Palin said. "Do you remember the conversations that took place about her, say superficial things that they don't talk about with men, her wardrobe and her hairstyles, all of that? That's a bit of that double standard."

Palin said she would rather talk about the Republican campaign's mission to reform government, get the economy back on track and bring opportunities to families, especially those with special needs.

"I'm not going to complain about it, I'm not going to whine about it, I'm going to plow through that, because we are embarking on something greater than that, than allowing that double standard to adversely affect us," she said.

But polls suggest that McCain is in trouble, partly because of Palin, who has been criticized as lacking the experience to become president. This week's NBC/Wall Street Journal poll suggested more people now think that Palin is hurting McCain's chances of becoming president than President George W. Bush, whose national approval ratings are in the 20s.

Palin disputed such conclusions.

"I think that those reporters asking those questions should come to some of our rallies and ask some of those in the crowd why it is they are enthused," she said, adding that the crowds see her as representing "hardworking, everyday American families."

In her speech Friday, Palin will lay out the campaign's plans to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, boost funding for special-needs children from birth to age 3 and allow parents to choose whether federal money for their child is used in a public, private, religious or secular school without navigating a cumbersome administrative process.

The federal government originally committed in 1975 to paying 40 percent of the cost of educating children with special needs, with the states paying the rest. But that has never happened; full funding would require about $26 billion a year, and the federal government currently shells out $10.9 billion.

The McCain campaign plans to phase in that money with an extra $3 billion a year over five years. McCain has called for a domestic discretionary spending freeze, but programs for disabled people would be exempt.

"It's not all about the money, it's not all about budgets," Palin said, adding vaguely that the money could come from "reprioritizing" the budget. "It's about that spirit of acceptance and embracing that diversity that is in the world with children who are special, a little bit different from the norm."

Palin's eyes welled up as she spoke about her sister's son, Karcher, who has autism.

"My sister and I have talked a lot about this. It makes me cry thinking about it," Palin said. "She asked with tears in her eyes, she says, 'What happens when Kurt and I, though, are elderly, then what happens to Karcher?"'

Palin calls that the story of millions of Americans. Her hope is to strengthen the National Institutes of Health "to make sure we're researching everything about autism and make sure we find out what causes it."

On top of the $150,000 spending spree in the first two weeksof October Palin spent:

$46,800 for two weeks of hair do's and makeup. Hockey Mom? Not.

Jeff,

So what makes you so confident that "She didn't troll for a rich husband to finance her ambitions."?

The snowmobile dealership, multiple houses and sea plane did not come from a workingman's salary.

And this weekend Sarah recharged her wardrobe and look before Reno at a cost of about five thousand dollars.

Think twice before you roll the dice for McCain and Palin.

Jeff,

Nice list, but you missed one. Cindy McCain, trophy wife of Senator John Sydney McCain III, has a net worth of some $100 million.

Does it really bother you that Gaye Symington and her husband choose to file separate tax returns? Must meant they're hiding something, eh? So what do you make of the fact that the McCains also file separate returns? Bit of a double standard, if you're going to give them a pass, isn't it?

I really wouldn't matter to me if ALL of the candidates wore stuff from WalMart or even the Salvation Army thrift stores. The POINT here is : What are they ABOUT?
What do they support and stand for?
I don't like liars or phonies. I don't believe a word she says, for one thing.
For another, she can never answer a direct question. She goes zinging off into another direction-- a figurative bullet richocheting crazily off the point. Actually, the point is to confuse, and she does that wonderfully.
And as for the overused "lipstick on a pig" golden-oldie, I'm tired of it.
There is another saying that is much older than that one, however, that is more apt, in Palin's case. Here it is:

"You can't make a Silk Purse out of a Sow's Ear."

I can't believe the double standard the left is putting out there. This is typical leftist hypocrisy, women are equal unless they're conservative then they're held to a different standard. Where do you think Hilary shops, WalMart?? Jeez grow up. Where do you think Obama gets his suits, off the rack?? If she wasn't dressed properly the left would be all over that. It's just a bunch of crap. Why don't we talk about Obama's plan to raise taxes of those that can afford to create jobs. How many "middle class" people create business's and create jobs? Can you say socialist?

Right on, Nine None.
I may as well throw in my two cents--I think I have that left from my last pay check...
Palin is a phony, and I cannot fathom why so many people swallow her "just regular folks" garbage. First, she says that the clothes are going to charity, or being auctioned off, or whatever (with no denial of the cost, mind you)--NOW she says that the clothes either don't even exist, or weren't that expensive? Whatever--the campaign has records that have already been disclosed on this matter!
She is so into head games, it's nauseating. She must think that people are reeeeaaallly stupid! Frankly, the ones who are still "into" her after all of the facts that have come out about her negative campaign tactics, her abuse of power as governor (and everything else) MUST be. I am heartened to realize, however that MANY in her OWN party are now seeing her for what she is--hence the drop in polls that show that not only is McCain severely out-of-touch for picking her, but that Palin is being called "a drag on the campaign." Oh, she won't lose it FOR him, but she certainly isn't helping him, either.
It sure didn't take long for the sparkle to wear off, did it?

Right back at you, BS.

Wasn't it the McCain campaign that connected the "lipstick on a pig" comments to Palin? Care to comment on the content of the article? When you can't handle the fact that McCain's campaign pays more to put make up on the VP candidate then it does for foreign policy advice, you resort to name calling. I understand. As McCain is so proud of his foreign policy experience, I guess Palin will now emphasize her experience in fashion and makeup.

You may now go back to your regularly scheduled complaining.

And Palin's makeup artist makes more than McCain's foreign policy advisor.

I guess it costs a lot to put lipstick on a pig.

Dick

You're calling the Palin family "rich, white elitists" sitting on their $1.2 million worth? At least she and her husband worked together to earn it. She didn't troll for a rich husband to finance her ambitions.

I hope you apply this same "rich, white, elitist" pejorative to the likes of:

- Senator Feinstein: Hubby worth over $1 billion

- Speaker Pelosi: Hubby worth over $50 million. Daddy was former mayor of Baltimore.

- Former Secretary of State Albright: former hubby was heir to huge publishing fortune.

- Senator Clinton: Worth over $50 million according to released campaign documents. Amazing since she and husband have spent most of their life as "public servants".

- Speaker and Gubenatorial candidate Symington: Worth unknown since she and hubby refuse to release their actual tax returns.

If Palin is invalidated because of her position of privilege, does this standard apply to those listed above as well?

Dick C... wait I'll just call you DICK, does it bother you for her to want her side of the story told? Your the kind of DICK that is real loud now and loves to voice his opinion but the day after you realize that Obama wasn't such a good choice you'll be saying you never voted for him because your against tax and spend democrats right? Sorry DICK the left wing media has kept things one sided long enough. Newspapers and news networks are suppose to report facts not just facts that they support. Have a nice day DICK.

Palin the pathalogical liar strikes again.

"Most of them, she said, haven't even left the belly of her campaign plane." Buying $150,00 worth of clothes and leaving "most of them" in the belly of the plane is not frugal in two ways. 1) $150,000 of clothes is by no means frugal. 2) Buying clothes at any price without the intent to wear them is not frugal either.

"[she] did not accept $150,000 worth of designer clothes from the Republican Party" But she did, that is why it is listed in the campaign disclosure. This is a bald outright lie.

""That whole thing is just, bad!" she said. "Oh, if people only knew how frugal we are." But the Palin's are not frugal. They have a home, a vacation home and a seaplane. They are worth 1.2 million dollars yet try to pawn themselves off as every day working stiffs. They are not, they are rich white elitist trying to pull the wool over the eyes of everyday folks in their quest for more power and avarice.

""It's kind of painful to be criticized for something when all the facts are not out there and are not reported," said Palin," But the facts are all out there. Sorry the truth hurts Sarah. Too bas Ms. palin is pathalogically allegeric to the truth.

"she will deliver her first major policy speech Friday, calling for full funding of special education" Special education is fully funded. Note the proposed '09 Spaulding budget increase for special eduction requirements. Here Palin is bastardizing her own son in an attempt to claim responsibility for social programs that already exist.

These are only the lies Sarah managed to spew in a single interview. Take a look at the rest of her record for the astounding amount of lies she has spewed since first taking office in Wasilla.
