• Food-growers deserve our praise
    June 14,2008

There are many great reasons to live in and around Barre and I would like to point out one of them: the generosity of the people who grow and sell food here.

The seventh-grade world geography students at Barre Town Middle and Elementary School recently wrapped up an intensive two months of study on Latin America that included units on our food system and what this says about culture.

The culminating event was the class field trip, where we had a phenomenal banquet based on local foods, all of which were provided by local farmers and grocers.

Hunger Mountain Co-op donated pounds of pasta and dressing for a pasta salad.

Chappelle's donated a large sack of potatoes.

LACE provided yellow eyed beans and fresh baked rolls.

And we roasted a full pig from Sugar Mountain Farm in West Topsham.

The day was a great success, helping make the year worth remembering. The teachers at Barre Town would like to thank the farmers and grocers for their wonderful support.
