BARRE — Erik Moreau took the biggest shot of Thursday's Vermont Frost Heaves game, from center court and, thankfully, was not rejected.

Moreau, on bended knee in front of 1,100 basketball fans and a moose, proposed to his two-year girlfriend Heather Welch between the first and second quarters of Thursday's 115-109 Frost Heaves loss to Manchester … and she said yes.

Was there any chance she would say anything else?

"I didn't think so," Moreau said. "But you never know, it's a game time call."

Moreau had been planning the public proposal for about two months and enlisted the aid of the American Basketball Association Frost Heaves as the public address announcer beckoned Welch to the floor and Bump the Moose, the Heaves' mascot, covered her eyes. Moreau then made his way onto the court, went to one knee with ring in hand and, when Bump backed away, popped the question to a stunned Welch.

"I had no idea," Welch said even as she admitted that the chances of a rejection were minimal. "I was ready to say yes."

After a hug Moreau told the crowd the verdict and the couple left the court to an ovation. The wedding date has not been set, but the guest list could be a problem.

"I may have to invite them all," Moreau said of the cheering crowd.
