Williamstown holds off rallying Chelsea, 44-37

WILLIAMSTOWN – Williamstown held off a late run by Chelsea and came away with a 44-37 win in boys basketball on Tuesday.

"It was another defensive struggle," Blue Devil coach Mike Macke said. "We were up 21-13 at the half and we went up by probably 10 through the third quarter, and they put on a run and cut it to 2, 39-37, and we were able to hold them off."

Pat Booth and Dan Shangraw paced Williamstown with 11 points each.

Zeb Allen led all scorers with 16 points for Chelsea (2-2).

Williamstown is now 3-2 and will host Danville on Friday.



BOYS BASKETBALL

Oxbow 54,

Lake Region 48 (OT)

BRADFORD – Despite four Lakers scoring in double figures, the Oxbow boys basketball team came out on top in an overtime victory over Lake Region, 54-48, on Tuesday.

"We played a really back and forth game," Oxbow coach Barry Emerson said. "All the quarters were tight; we just came out on top in overtime. We went to our big guy (Daniel McKelvey), and we finished at the line, we were 4-4 in overtime."

Lake Region took a one-point lead at the half, 21-20, and the score was notched at 44 at the end of regulation.

McKelvey led all scorers with 17 points for the Olympians, and Drew Jones added 14.

Oxbow improved to 3-3 and will travel to Montpelier on Thursday.



Hazen 68, South Royalton 58

HARDWICK – Spencer Howard dropped 24 points on South Royalton as Hazen downed the Royals 68-58 in boys basketball on Tuesday.

"We went on a 10-0 run in the last two minutes of the first half," Hazen coach Aaron Hill said. "From there we kept a lead of six points or more."

Zach Bartlett added 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wildcats.

Miles Ellis chipped in 14 points for South Royalton.

Hazen improved to 5-2 and will host Stowe on Friday.



Websterville Baptist 41,

UCA 26

NEWPORT – The Websterville Baptist boys basketball team pulled away in the second half and downed UCA 41-26 on Tuesday.

"We were kind of sloppy in the first half," Websterville coach Jay Ransom said. "We played better in the second, got some open looks with some layups and foul shots and pulled away from them."

Websterville led by one at the half, 16-15.

Isaac Ransom led Websterville with 14 points, and Justin Town added 12.

Websterville, now 4-2, is back in action on Friday against Sharon Academy in the Cabot Tournament.



GIRLS BASKETBALL

Essex 54, Spaulding 39

ESSEX – Essex held on to a 23-17 halftime lead to down Spaulding 54-39 in girls basketball on Tuesday.

"Essex just played really hard, harder than we did, and we didn't shoot well," Spaulding coach Tom Roberge said.

Brittany Tullar paced the Tide with nine points.

"It appears we shot 12 percent from the field," Roberge said of the now 5-5 Crimson Tide.

Cait Teegarden led all scorers with 19 points, and Kate Cioffi and Hannah Bushey each added 12 for Essex (6-3).

Spaulding will host Burlington on Thursday.



HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASTICS

Milton 118.45, Harwood 116.55

DUXBURY – Kylie Aronson finished second in the all-around with a score of 29.425 as the Harwood gymnastics team dropped a close competition with Milton, 118.45-116.55, on Tuesday.

Aronson, a junior co-captain, was steady on vault, finishing second with a score of 8.1. She placed first on bars with a 7.05 and scored a 7.4 on floor.

Fellow co-captain Courtney Nelson placed third on vault (7.9), beam (7.95) and floor (7.9) for the Highlanders.

Francesca Bennett placed on vault with a 6.55 for Harwood.

"Freshman Shannon Aronson, Kylie's younger sister, is coming along," Harwood gymnastics coach Annissa Touchette said. "She's definitely going to be someone to look for in the next couple years. She's becoming a more solid competitor each meet."

Shannon Aronson scored a 7.425 on floor and a 7.3 on vault.

Stephanie LaRose won the all-around for Milton with 31.6.

Harwood is now 1-3 and will next compete at South Burlington on Saturday.



Women's Basketball

Norwich 60, Springfield 51

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Four players scored in double figures as the Norwich women's basketball team won its 10th straight game with a 60-51 victory over host Springfield College in game one of the 2007 Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic.

Norwich (10-0) led 33-25 at the break and went on to lead by as many as 14 points on three occasions in the second half.

Caitlin Bailey led NU with 17 points, while Kayleigh Shappy added 11 points. Monica Selander and Kristi Powlovich added 10 points apiece. Corey Finch posted a dozen points for Springfield, while Lauren O'Connor chipped in 11 points.

Norwich outrebounded Springfield 46-35, and NU's Sarah Chap posted a game-high 15 boards, while O'Connor topped Springfield with nine rebounds.

Norwich will take on Bowdoin game in Wednesday's title game at 5:30 p.m. at Springfield College's Blake Arena.
