Jake Couture leads Spaulding over Oxbow, 6-0

WELLS RIVER Jake Couture scored the final two goals for Spaulding as the Crimson Tide shut out Oxbow 6-0 in boys soccer Tuesday.
"They outplayed us," Olympian coach Matt Taylor said. "They're a lot better team than we are. They got some early goals. It was 4-0 at halftime and they took the wind out of the team."
Jordan Robbins, Brian VanGuilder, Chris Appleton and Justin Hepburn all scored in the first half for Spaulding. Hepburn assisted on the Robbins and VanGuilder goals and Couture assisted on the Appleton goal.
Ian Bowmer and Brandon Martin assisted on the Couture goals.
"We out-manned them," Spaulding coach Rob Moran said. "They played well, they tried hard. We were just more dominant."
Ethan Martin made a dozen saves for Oxbow, who fall to 1-8 with the loss and travel to Northfield on Saturday.
Peter Florucci and Steve Thompson combined for 7 saves for the 5-3 Tide who host Northfield on Thursday.
BOYS SOCCER
Harwood 2, Burlington 0
DUXBURY Harwood blanked Burlington 2-0 in boys soccer Tuesday.
Both Highlander goals came in the last seven minutes as Eric Mackey set up Steve LaRock for a headball in the 74th minute and Greg Mehuron scored on a Doug Mackey assist with 1:30 left in the game. Both goals were from crosses.
"It was a very closely fought game," Harwood coach Don Haddox said. "The teams are very evenly matched."
Nate Goss-Woliner saved five "very solid, point-blank shots" for Harwood.
The Highlanders improve to 2-5-1 and travel to Colchester on Saturday.
Peoples Academy 2, Stowe 0
STOWE Peoples Academy held on to a 1-0 halftime lead to beat Stowe 2-0 at home in boys soccer Tuesday.
Travis Fitzgerald was assisted by Lucas Fitzgerald in the 14th minute of the first half, and Keith Cote scored unassisted in the 12th minute of the second half for the Wolves.
"Peoples is a hard team to come back from," Stowe coach Jamie Birmingham said.
Peoples keeper Adam Doherty made 10 saves in the shutout as the Wolves remain undefeated at 6-0-1.
Alex Grosvenor and Tyler Proux each made four saves for Stowe, who drop to 2-4-2 and travel to Winooski on Saturday.
Hazen 5, Richford 0
HARDWICK Nathan Robarge made 25 saves for Richford in the 5-0 loss to Hazen.
"Their keeper did a nice job of keeping them in the game early," Hazen coach Mike Noyes said.
Kel Donlon scored on an assist by Jon Flood over five minutes into the game. Billy Vasiliadis scored on a Tristan Southworth assist to make it a 2-0 game at halftime.
Ben Forant and Andrew Whitney scored unassisted and Zach Lemay was set up by Justin Delaricheliere to round out the Wildcat scoring.
"We had good possession of the ball and got scoring out of five players," Noyes explained. Spencer Howard made nine saves in the shutout for Hazen, who improves to 4-3. The Wildcats play UCA as part of Hazen's homecoming weekend on Saturday.
Richford drops to 2-5.
Blue Mountain 9, Rochester 2
WELLS RIVER Shane O'Donnell-Leach, James Jobim and Ira Musty each scored two goals for Blue Mountain in its 9-2 win over Rochester.
Charles Jobim, Michael Johns and Felix Rommel also scored for the undefeated Bucks.
"This team plays the game the way it should be played," Blue Mountain coach David O'Donnell-Leach said of his team.
CJ Smith and Tom Cole combined for five saves for Blue Mountain who host Whitcomb on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Montpelier 45, Mt. Abraham 8
BRISTOL Montpelier and Mt. Abraham played out the second half of the lightning-shortened game from Sept. 9, and Eli Sherman continued to dominate offensively as the Solons won easily 45-8.
On Sept. 9, Sherman kicked a 42-yard field goal in the first quarter and then had a 55-yard run to set up a one-yard run by Solon quarterback Dave Thomas in the second quarter. Sherman also scored on a five-yard run in addition to kicking both PAT attempts to bring the game to 17-0.
Tuesday night, Sherman had two rushing touchdowns for a total of 70 yards. Brad Durkee had a one-yard touchdown run and Vanja Popovic had a 14-yard touchdown run. All four extra points were kicked by Sherman to cap the game at 45-8.
The lone Mt. Abe touchdown came on an Alex Huizenga 76-yard reception from Dean Butler with just under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Eagles connected on a two-point conversion by Brenden Hoag.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Mt. Mansfield 43, Missisquoi 53, Spaulding 54, Mt. Abraham 80, Milton INC
MILTON Spaulding had three runners finish in the top 10 as the Crimson Tide turned in a respectable third place team finish in girls cross country.
Gretchen Singer finished third with a time of 21:50. Grace Amber (23:33) and Morgann Gehlbach (24:58) crossed the line fourth and ninth, respectively, for Spaulding.
Sarah Flint of Missisquoi finished first with a time of 20:40.
Spaulding runs again next Tuesday at the BFA-Fairfax Relay Carnival.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Mt. Mansfield 15, Missisquoi 57, Spaulding 99,
Mt. Abraham INC
MILTON Zach Baldwin and Ricky Abare, both freshmen, turned in top-25 finishes for Spaulding in boys cross country.
In a field of 70 runners, Baldwin came in 20th with a time of 19:06, and Abare crossed the line two seconds later for 22nd place.
Mt. Mansfield continued its domination of boys cross country, placing eight in the top 10 and 12 in the top 15.
Spaulding travels to Fairfax for the BFA-Fairfax Relay Carnival next Tuesday.
MEN'S SOCCER
Norwich 4,
Green Mountain College 1
POULTNEY Sophomore Drew Dilley scored a pair of goals to lead Norwich to a 4-1 win over Green Mountain.
Dilley opened the scoring in the fourth minute on a rebound. Sophomore Jason Grupp boosted the NU lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute off an assist by fellow sophomore, Emmanuel Bol.
Green Mountain got on the board with a few seconds remaining in the first half as David Whitbeck scored on a 30-yard blast off a J.R. Magruder assist.
Dilley scored the first goal of the second half with Bol providing the assist, his second of the game, increasing the Cadets' lead to 3-1. Sophomore Rob Harlow capped the scoring late in the game with an unassisted goal for the 4-1 final.
NU goalies Jeff Warner and Jacob Pagragan combined for seven saves, while Green Mountain goaltender Zack Fortuna stopped 19 shots.
Norwich returns to GNAC play on Saturday with a home game against Emmanuel. Green Mountain travels to Lyndon State for an in-state battle.
Norwich improves to 5-3 overall, while Green Mountain drops to 1-9.
FALL BASEBALL
Vermont Tech. 7,
N.H. Tech. Institute 6
RANDOLPH Sean Hamel hit a walk-off grand slam to lift Vermont Technical College over visiting New Hampshire Technical Institute in fall baseball Tuesday night.
Hamel went 2-3 on the night with a double, a homerun and five RBI.
David Benjamin got the loss for New Hampshire.
Garrett Crawford came in in relief and recorded the win on his 21st birthday for VTC. The Green Knights are now 5-4 (2-2 Sunrise Conference) and host the University of New Hampshire on Saturday.
