QUECHEE — A 58-year-old woman from Wilder committed suicide by jumping off the Quechee Gorge Bridge on Route 4 late Monday night, according to Hartford Police.
The body of the woman, who police would not name, was found at the bottom of Quechee Gorge Tuesday.
Capt. David Rich of the Hartford Police Department said the woman's husband reported her missing Tuesday morning at the same time police received reports of an abandoned vehicle and clothing found near the bridge.
Rich said the cause of death was the impact of the fall and no foul play was suspected.
"There is nothing to lead us to believe anything other than suicide at this time," he said.
An autopsy report is expected early next week.
Rich said in his 34 years at the Hartford Police Department, suicide jumps from the Quechee Gorge Bridge have been a regular routine, occurring sometimes twice a year.
"It tends to be late spring," he said. "That's the time of year depression is the greatest."
