Harwood skates past Montpelier, 5-2

WATERBURY – Brendan VanTuinen recorded two goals to lift Harwood over Montpelier, 5-2

Scoreless going into the second period, Harwood found its rhythm and left the second 3-1.

"It was two-way hockey." Harwood coach David Morse said. "Both teams played very well; we just happened to get a couple more goals then they did."

Martin Kasey, Eric Sweet and Elliot Sigel each contributed a goal for Harwood. Montpelier's John Pelkey and Peter Benoit each scored a goal.

Harwood improves to 13-3 while Montpelier falls to 5-9.



Rice 4, Stowe 3

STOWE – In an action-filled third period, Rice came out on top over Stowe, 4-3.

Heading into the third period, Stowe led by a Joe McGovern goal from the first. The two teams battled back and forth with Will Guy picking up two goals for Stowe. Guy's goals weren't enough to keep Stowe out front. Rice fought hard and with three minutes left to play, Hunter Thayer scored the game-winning goal for Rice.

Raider coach Don McDowel said it felt nice to be able to compete with a tough Division I team.

"It was a great game for us to play." McDowel added "We know now that we can play with anybody."

Stowe falls to 2-12-1.



Mt. Mansfield 2, Northfield 1

NORTHFIELD – Owen Reinders and Doug Miller each scored a goal to lead Mt. Mansfield past Northfield, with goalie Tucker Labare making 18 saves.

Northfield's Ryan Robertson scored on an assist from Howard Hulbert 4:32 into the third period.

Northfield goalie Dustin Wood made 30 saves.



U-32 5, St. Johnsbury 2

ST. JOHNSBURY – Anders Ostrum scored twice and assisted on another as U-32 cruised by St. Johnsbury.

Joe Whitcomb, Nick Richards and Mike Moran all scored once while Brennan Cayia had three assists for U-32 (6-8). Moran also recorded two helpers with Max Semler making 14 saves.

Nate Nerony scored two goals for the Hilltoppers and Tyler Hacking made 35 saves.

The Raiders will travel to Burr and Burton on Wednesday.



BFA- St. Albans 9, Spaulding 0

ST. ALBANS – Kyle Taylor and Mark Collins both scored two goals each as BFA-St. Albans rolled past Spaulding.

Spaulding falls to 9-7.

Colin Lord and Alex Wood combined for 43 saves for Spauldin.

The Crimson Tide will travel to Champlain Valley on Tuesday.



GIRLS HOCKEY

Stowe 2, Middlebury 0

STOWE – Alison Vigneau and Lauren Page both scored to lead Stowe past Middlebury.

Vigneau's goal was assisted by Sandy Schlosser in the first period while Page's unassisted tally came four minutes into the final period.

Claire Francis made 14 saves for the 6-7-2 Raiders. Kate Donia made 28 stops for Middlebury.

Stowe will travel to Essex on Monday.



WRESTLING

COLCHESTER – With three overall winners, the Spaulding wrestling team captured fifth out of 18 schools at the Colchester Tournament this weekend.

Kyle Fleury (140-pound), Brian Bailey (160-pound) and Brett Koziar (215-pound) all were crowned champions in their respected weight classes for the Crimson Tide.

Shawn Burrington (103-pound), Kevin Fleury (112-pound), and Colin Crowther (125-pound) also had solid showings. All three finished fourth in their weight classes.

"All the kids wrestled tough and we are starting to push for the postseason," Spaulding coach Dave Fournier.

Spaulding will host a meet on Tuesday against Mount Mansfield and Middlebury.



ALPINE

BOLTON – The Essex girls and boys alpine teams swept to victories in the two-run Giant Slalom Race at Bolton Valley.

Four schools competed with 35 girls and 42 boys participating.

Essex's Courtney Donovan was the girls' winner while Lucas Reilly, also of Essex, won on the boys side.

The top U-32 skiers were Gus Hagen-Dillon (18th) on the girls side and Francois Steenkamp (ninth) on the boys side. U-32 finished fourth in the girls standings and third in the boys.

U-32 will next race at Smuggler's Notch on Friday and Saturday at the Essex High School Winter Carnival along with nine other Northern Vermont High School teams.
